Ziggurat Gallery

The Ziggurat gallery converts a vacant storefront into an active edge. It places art on display at the street, making the interior visible and engaging from the outside, and establishing a steady, everyday presence along the sidewalk.

The Ziggurat gallery project gives a vacant and leftover space an active civic presence. It employs art, and a simple architectural palette, to establish an engaging presence along a sidewalk in Oklahoma City’s downtown core.

A continuous glass wall draws daylight deep into the space and maintains a clear visual connection between the gallery and the city. The threshold is direct and unembellished, allowing the work itself to signal entry and invite participation from passersby.

Inside, the gallery is defined by clarity and restraint. White walls, exposed structural concrete, and a polished concrete floor—materials drawn from the building’s structural language—provide a neutral field for changing exhibitions. A simple arrangement of ceiling-mounted fixtures establishes even, consistent light for frequently rotated exhibitions. Warm wood elements at stairs and ramps signal and manage subtle shifts in level, organizing circulation as an integral part of the gallery experience.

As part of a broader mix of uses within an adaptively reused building, the gallery supports a continuous, lived-in presence—tying the building to the cultural life of downtown and reinforcing the street as a place of exchange.
