Transformation from a single use to mixed-use supportive housing

The Oasis Inn Conversion project in Tacoma, Washington transforms an existing hotel into a place for care, stability, and transition. Redeveloped by the Low Income Housing Institute, the building will serve people at or below 30% AMI, or those experiencing homelessness, through a mix of uses: long-term housing, permanent supportive housing, enhanced shelter, and short-term medical respite. The project is informed by resident needs and emphasizes stability and access to supportive services. A partnership with a regional health provider brings clinical services on site and shapes how spaces are reorganized to support programs for recovery.

Our approach to the project is direct and restrained. The design looks for the smallest moves that can do the most work—reconfiguring hotel rooms for new uses and making strategic interventions that create spaces for care and shared common amenity. What exists is used wherever possible, leveraging the inherent structure of the building to create a thoughtful and responsive environment.
